Os lip\u00eddios s\u00e3o mol\u00e9culas que cont\u00eam hidrocarbonetos e constituem os blocos de constru\u00e7\u00e3o da estrutura e da fun\u00e7\u00e3o das c\u00e9lulas vivas. Os lip\u00eddios est\u00e3o presentes em todas as c\u00e9lulas vivas. Na placa ungueal, durante o processo de queratiniza\u00e7\u00e3o, em que as c\u00e9lulas vivas perdem todo o seu conte\u00fado celular para serem substitu\u00eddas por queratina, os lip\u00eddios s\u00e3o empurrados para fora e formam uma prote\u00e7\u00e3o e lubrifica\u00e7\u00e3o eficientes entre as c\u00e9lulas da placa ungueal.
