Classified as a body\u2011focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB), it may occur consciously or unconsciously and is sometimes linked to mental health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Causes &amp; Triggers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stress, anxiety, boredom, or perfectionism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensory satisfaction from removing perceived imperfections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learned behaviour from family or peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associated with OCD, ADHD, or other anxiety disorders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Risks &amp; Consequences:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nail plate deformities or slowed growth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cuts, bleeding, and chronic inflammation of the skin around nails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased susceptibility to bacterial or fungal infections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain and functional discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Management &amp; Treatment:<\/strong><br>Effective approaches may include Habit Reversal Training (HRT), cognitive\u2011behavioural therapy (CBT), stress\u2011management techniques, use of physical barriers (e.g., gloves, nail covers), and professional nail care.
