Endocarditis

Definition (plain English):
Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of the heart (the endocardium), often caused by bacteria.

Exemplos:

  • Bacterial endocarditis linked to bloodstream infections
  • Infective endocarditis in people with damaged heart valves

How it relates to nails:
Endocarditis can cause hemorragias por estilhaços in the nails, which are small streaks of dried blood under the nail plate, linked to vascular damage from the infection.

Confusable with:
Splinter haemorrhages from vasculitis or simple trauma.
