EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate)
EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate) is a type of liquid monomer commonly used in professional acrylic nail systems. It is mixed with acrylic powder to create a workable bead that hardens through a chemical reaction known as polymerisation, forming a durable nail enhancement.
What It Is Used For
EMA is used to create acrylic nail enhancements, including overlays, extensions, and sculpted nails. When combined with polymer powder, it forms a strong yet flexible coating that adheres to the natural nail.
Why EMA Is Used in Nail Products
Ethyl Methacrylate is specifically formulated for cosmetic nail use because it:
- Provides strength with controlled flexibility
- Allows sufficient working time for shaping
- Adheres effectively when applied correctly
- Can be safely removed using acetone soak-off methods
EMA vs MMA
EMA should not be confused with Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). MMA is unsuitable for cosmetic nail use due to its excessive rigidity and increased risk of nail damage and adverse reactions. Professional nail systems are formulated using EMA instead.
Important Note
Although EMA is considered appropriate for professional nail products, skin contact with uncured monomer should be avoided, as repeated exposure may contribute to sensitisation or allergic reactions.
