Onychophagia (pronounced on‑i‑ko‑FAY‑jee‑ah)

A chronic habit of biting one’s fingernails or toenails, often involving chewing of the surrounding skin. It is classified as a body‑focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB) and, in some cases, a form of onychotillomania (compulsive nail picking or manipulation).
Causes & Triggers:
Onychophagia can be linked to psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, boredom, or perfectionism. It may also be associated with mental health conditions including obsessive‑compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and certain anxiety disorders. Learned behaviour from family members is also common.
Risks & Consequences:
- Nail plate deformity and stunted growth
- Damage to cuticles and nail folds
- Increased risk of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections
- Dental problems such as chipped teeth and enamel wear
- Transmission of germs from fingers to mouth
Management & Treatment:
Breaking the habit typically involves behavioural approaches such as Habit Reversal Training (HRT), stress‑reduction techniques, use of deterrent products (e.g., bitter‑tasting nail coatings), and professional nail care. In severe cases, psychological therapy may be indicated.
