Definition (plain English):
Skin cancer can rarely begin in the nail matrix (the growth area under the skin at the base of the nail).

How it relates to nails:
Skin cancers of the matrix may cause dark streaks (melanonychia), irregular pigmentation, nail splitting, or destruction of the nail plate.

Ethnic pigmentation, trauma, fungal infection, or drug-induced pigmentation.
