Onychotillomania (pronounced on‑i‑ko‑til‑oh‑MAY‑nee‑ah)
Definition:
A compulsive habit of picking, pulling, or manipulating the fingernails, toenails, or surrounding skin, often resulting in visible damage. Classified as a body‑focused repetitive behaviour (BFRB), it may occur consciously or unconsciously and is sometimes linked to mental health conditions.

Causes & Triggers:

  • Stress, anxiety, boredom, or perfectionism
  • Sensory satisfaction from removing perceived imperfections
  • Learned behaviour from family or peers
  • Associated with OCD, ADHD, or other anxiety disorders

Risks & Consequences:

  • Nail plate deformities or slowed growth
  • Cuts, bleeding, and chronic inflammation of the skin around nails
  • Increased susceptibility to bacterial or fungal infections
  • Pain and functional discomfort

Management & Treatment:
Effective approaches may include Habit Reversal Training (HRT), cognitive‑behavioural therapy (CBT), stress‑management techniques, use of physical barriers (e.g., gloves, nail covers), and professional nail care. Severe cases may benefit from psychological or medical support.

Etymology:
From the Greek onycho (“nail”), tillo (“to pull out”), and mania (“madness” or “compulsion”).
