Term: Severe illness history

Definition (plain English):
A past episode of serious illness can leave visible marks in the nails, even after recovery.

Examples:

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Serious long-term infections or hospitalisation

How it relates to nails:
Severe illness may halt or slow nail matrix activity. This can leave Beau’s lines or cause nails to shed (onychomadesis). Multiple lines can reflect repeated illnesses.

Confusable with:
Nail growth interruptions from chemotherapy or trauma.
