Idiopathic

Term: Idiopathic (no clear cause)

Definition (plain English):
Idiopathic means that the condition develops without an identifiable cause.

Examples:

  • Pincer nails that develop without trauma or systemic disease
  • Some forms of nail ridging with no underlying trigger

How it relates to nails:
When no clear medical, traumatic, or systemic reason can be found, the condition may be labelled idiopathic.

Confusable with:
Conditions that do have identifiable causes, such as trauma or systemic illness, but present with similar nail changes.
