Inflammatory Conditions

Term: Inflammatory conditions

Definition (plain English):
Inflammatory conditions are illnesses where the immune system or chronic irritation causes ongoing swelling, redness, and tissue damage in the body.

Examples:

  • Psoriasis (skin and nails)
  • Lichen planus (skin, nails, mucous membranes)
  • Eczema / dermatitis
  • Autoimmune connective tissue diseases (lupus, scleroderma)

How it relates to nails:
Chronic inflammation can damage the nail matrix (where the nail grows) or the nail bed, leading to ridges, pits, onycholysis (lifting), or permanent nail scarring.

Confusable with:
Fungal nail infections, trauma, or ageing changes, which can look similar but have different causes.
