Ethnic Pigmentation

Term: Ethnic pigmentation

Definition (plain English):
Some people naturally develop pigmentation in their nails due to their ethnic background.

Examples:

  • Longitudinal melanonychia (brown or black lines) in people with darker skin types
  • Even, regular pigment bands on multiple nails

How it relates to nails:
Ethnic pigmentation is harmless and not linked to disease. It is important to distinguish it from dangerous conditions like subungual melanoma, which may look similar but has irregular or changing pigment.

Confusable with:
Melanoma, drug-induced pigmentation, or trauma-related pigmentation.
