Fever

Term: Fever

Definition (plain English):
A fever is when your body temperature rises above normal, usually in response to infection, inflammation, or illness.

Examples:

  • Flu (influenza)
  • Pneumonia
  • Viral or bacterial infections

How it relates to nails:
High fevers can stress the body enough to temporarily halt nail growth at the matrix. Weeks later, this may appear as Beau’s lines (horizontal grooves) or nail shedding (onychomadesis).

Confusable with:
Growth disturbances caused by chemotherapy, trauma, or other systemic illnesses.
