Term: Footwear pressure

Definition (plain English):
Tight or ill-fitting shoes can put continuous pressure on toenails, leading to nail damage.

Examples:

  • Athletes wearing tight sports shoes
  • Long-term use of narrow shoes

How it relates to nails:
Pressure can cause thickened nails (onychogryphosis), pincer nails, or bruising under the nail (subungual haematoma).

Confusable with:
Psoriasis, fungal infections, or trauma from impact injuries.
