Definition (plain English):
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system, making the body less able to fight infections.
Examples:
- Untreated HIV infection
- Advanced HIV progressing to AIDS
How it relates to nails:
HIV can increase the risk of unusual nail infections, such as proximal subungual onychomycosis, and cause colour or shape changes.
Confusable with:
Similar fungal infections or nail changes in people with other immune-suppressing conditions.
