Hypoalbuminaemia

Term: Hypoalbuminaemia

Definition (plain English):
A condition where the blood has abnormally low levels of albumin, a protein made by the liver.

Examples:

  • Nephrotic syndrome (kidney disease)
  • Liver failure
  • Severe malnutrition

How it relates to nails:
Can cause Muehrcke’s lines (paired white lines across the nails that don’t move with growth).

Confusable with:
Mee’s lines (caused by poisoning or systemic insult), which look similar but do grow out with the nail.
