Lung Disease

Term: Lung disease

Definition (plain English):
Lung disease refers to conditions that affect the lungs and breathing. These can limit oxygen levels in the blood and affect overall health.

Examples:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Lung cancer
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Chronic bronchitis

How it relates to nails:
Lung disease is one of the most common causes of clubbing, where the nails curve more and the fingertips become enlarged. It can also cause cyanosis (bluish nail colour) due to low oxygen levels.

Confusable with:
Clubbing caused by heart disease, liver disease, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Cyanosis caused by poor circulation (vascular disease).
