Matrix Trauma

Term: Matrix trauma

Definition (plain English):
Matrix trauma means damage to the nail matrix — the part of the nail unit under the skin where the nail is formed.

Examples:

  • Crushing injuries to the base of the nail
  • Repetitive trauma from sports or manual work
  • Overzealous manicuring or filing at the cuticle area

How it relates to nails:
Since the matrix produces the nail plate, damage here often causes ridges, grooves, or permanent deformities in the nail. Severe trauma can stop nail growth temporarily (Beau’s lines) or even permanently.

Confusable with:
Beau’s lines caused by systemic illness, chemotherapy, or severe infection; ridges caused by psoriasis or lichen planus.
