Term: Nail biting (onychophagia)

Definition (plain English):
A habit where a person regularly bites their fingernails or toenails.

Examples:

  • Stress-related biting
  • Habitual nail chewing

How it relates to nails:
Leads to shortened, damaged nails and increases the risk of infection around the nail folds.

Confusable with:
Trauma from other sources (manual work, accidents).
