Nutritional Deficiencies

Term: Nutritional deficiencies

Definition (plain English):
When the body doesn’t get enough essential nutrients, it can affect many organs, including the nails.

Examples:

  • Iron deficiency → spoon-shaped nails (koilonychia)
  • Protein deficiency → brittle or thin nails
  • Zinc deficiency → white spots or ridges

How it relates to nails:
Poor nutrition weakens keratin production in the nail matrix, leading to ridges, brittleness, or changes in nail shape.

Confusable with:
Nail changes from systemic illness, ageing, or trauma.
