Systemic Illness

Term: Systemic illness

Definition (plain English):
A systemic illness is a condition that affects the whole body, not just one part.

Examples:

  • Severe infections such as pneumonia or flu
  • Autoimmune disorders (like lupus)
  • Widespread diseases affecting multiple organs

How it relates to nails:
When the body is under major stress from a systemic illness, the nail matrix (the growth centre of the nail) can slow down or stop temporarily. This may lead to nail signs such as Beau’s lines, ridges, or temporary nail shedding.

Confusable with:
Nail changes caused by trauma, medications, or chemotherapy, which can look very similar to systemic illness effects.
