Trauma

Term: Trauma

Definition (plain English):
Damage to the nail caused by physical injury.

Examples:

  • A heavy object dropped on the nail
  • Repetitive pressure from sports or shoes

How it relates to nails:
Trauma can cause onycholysis (lifting), bruising under the nail (subungual haematoma), or permanent ridges.

Confusable with:
Subungual melanoma (if there is dark pigment) or fungal infections that cause nail thickening.
