Vasculitis

Definition (plain English):
Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow and damage surrounding tissues.

Examples:

  • Autoimmune vasculitis (e.g., lupus-related)
  • Small-vessel vasculitis

How it relates to nails:
Vasculitis can cause splinter haemorrhages (thin, dark streaks under the nails) due to bleeding from tiny blood vessels.

Confusable with:
Splinter haemorrhages from trauma (e.g., hitting the nail).
