Definition (plain English):
Chronic or severe problems with the kidneys can affect the balance of salts, fluids, and proteins in the body.

Examples:

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • End-stage renal failure
  • Nephrotic syndrome

How it relates to nails:
May cause Lindsay’s nails (half-and-half nails), Muehrcke’s lines, or pale nails from anaemia secondary to kidney failure.

Confusable with:
Liver disease and other systemic causes of colour changes.
