What is the best treatment for white keratin granulations on your toes?

White keratin granulations on the toenails are harmless surface changes that often appear after repeated polish or gel wear. They’re not an infection or disease — just a sign the nail surface has become a little dehydrated and roughened where keratin cells lifted.

Here’s how to treat and improve them:

1. Wash with soap and water.

2. Moisturising & Nail Recovery

  1. Apply a nail oil or cuticle oil (jojoba or vitamin E–based) daily.
  2. Massage into the nail plate and cuticle to help restore flexibility and hydration.
  3. A nail-strengthening serum or keratin treatment can also help rebind the surface.

3. Avoid Dehydrating Products

  1. If you must wear polish, use a nourishing base coat designed for weak or damaged nails.

4. Keep Nails Short & Protected

  1. Keep the free edge smooth to prevent catching or peeling.
  2. Wear breathable socks and dry shoes thoroughly to avoid extra moisture stress.

5. Allow Time

  1. As the nail grows out, the white areas will disappear — toenails grow slowly, so it might take several months for full renewal.

⚠️ Educational note:
Keratin granulations are not fungal or infectious. But if white spots persist, spread, or become crumbly or thickened, it could be something else (like superficial white onychomycosis) and worth showing a podiatrist for confirmation.
