A veruca, commonly known as a plantar wart, is a small, grainy skin growth typically found on the soles of the feet. Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), verucas develop in areas subjected to pressure and friction, which often causes them to form a hard layer of skin on top. Verucas are contagious through direct contact and can be painful due to their location on weight-bearing areas of the foot. They are distinguishable by their rough texture, the presence of tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels), and the interruption of the skin’s natural lines over the growth. Treatment can vary from topical solutions to professional removal methods depending on the severity and persistence of the wart.
