Stratum corneum

The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis of the skin. The skin cells from the basal layer have become fully keratinised and are no longer living. They will eventually be sloughed off by desquamation. Its purpose is to protect the lower layers from losing too much moisture and a major barrier to chemical transfer through the skin
