What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs when the body cannot properly produce or use insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and allows glucose (sugar) to enter cells where it is used for energy.

There are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes: This type of diabetes occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, leading to a complete deficiency of insulin. This type of diabetes usually develops in children and young adults and requires lifelong insulin therapy to manage blood sugar levels.
  • Type 2 diabetes: This type of diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, or when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to meet the body’s needs. Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults and is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and poor diet. It can often be managed with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, oral medications, and sometimes insulin injections.

Both types of diabetes can lead to high blood sugar levels, which can damage various organs and tissues in the body over time.
